60,000 plus are on hand as two of New York’s teams, the Giants and Yankees, face off in the first game of the World Series. This would be the fifth time since 1921 that these two city rivals would meet in the series including the previous year (1936) when the Yanks won in six games.
Things started off well for the Giants as they took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning when Jimmy Ripple scored on a ground out double play. But in the bottom of the sixth the Yankees would get the upperhand in a big way, scoring seven times aided by two Giants errors in the inning. Two-run singles by Joe DiMaggio and George Selkirk were the big hits in the rally as the Yanks chased Giants ace Carl Hubbell from the game . In the eighth inning Tony Lazzeri hit a solo home run for good measure and giving the Yankees a 8-1 lead. On the mound for home team was Lefty Gomez who got the complete game win holding the Giants to just six hits.
The Yankees took the series with relative ease winning it in five games. Lazzeri lead the winners with a .400 average and Gomez would win two games in the series while posting a 2.33 ERA. It would be the Yanks second consecutive World Series title and sixth overall title.
