The West Coast phenom Joe DiMaggio gets up for his first at-bat in the majors against the St Louis Browns Jack Knott. And the Yankee Clipper MLB debut would not disappoint as he would go 3 for 6 with a triple in a 14-5 Yankees rout. The Browns would actually strike first in the opening frame scoring three runs, but the Yanks, led by the rookie, would score four times in the first and three more times the next inning to take a 7-3 lead. Lou Gehrig would finish the day 4 for 5 and center fielder Ben Chapman was a perfect 4 for 4 and knocked in five runs. All in all New York finished with 17 hits.
But not everything was peaches n’ cream for the Yankees, reliable ace Lefty Gomez was sent to an early shower in the fourth inning after giving up nine hits and five runs, with only two runs being earned because of an error from Yankees third baseman Red Rolfe.
An estimated 25,000 were on hand for the historic debut of one of soon to be Yankee legends. Also in the photo is home plate umpire Bill Summers, best known for calling Jackie Robinson safe on his famous World Series steal of home, and Browns catcher Rollie Hemsley, who later in the inning would get injured when an errant throw hit in the back of the neck. Tony Giuliani would take his place for the remainder of the game.
