In the first inning of the first game of a doubleheader, the Yankees Babe Ruth tries to score from from third base on a Bill Dickey ground ball to Tigers shortstop Billy Rogell, but Rogell’s throw to catcher Ray Hayworth beats the sliding Ruth for the out. But the Yankees would still leave the inning up 3-0 behind the 2-run home run from the bat of JackSaltzgaver. New York would tag on two runs in the 3rd inning for a five-run lead.
But the Tigers would storm back in the top of the 6th inning scoring five times with the help of a Charlie Gehringer 2-run homer and a 2-run single from Hayworth. The following inning the Tigers bats stayed hot scoring four more runs for a 9-5 lead. Despite his shaky start earlier in the game, Detroit’s starting pitcher General Crowder would get the win holding the Yankees juggernaut lineup scoreless over the final five innings with the help of relief pitching from teammate Firpo Marberry, who got the save in the ninth inning.
The Yanks would salvage the day by winning the second game 5-0 with Lou Gehrig hitting his 37th home run of the year. Attendance for the Tuesday doubleheader was 72,000.
