Weekly Blog Question!

Who do you think was the greatest of all time, Ruth or Cobb…or someone else! Please leave your comments below!

Today I’m starting a new feature. Every week I will pose a baseball history related question and will encourage our readers to voice their opinion. To start things off, I’m asking who is the best player of all time. I know we have partisans on all sides. We’d love to hear what you have to say!

  1. In my opinion, it’s Ruth…his power numbers, especially his slugging average is “off the charts.” Plus he was an outstanding pitcher. Please feel free to disagree with me!

  2. Hi! I am not a baseball follower (I am simply doing some research) but this is so fun I had to chime in! In my non-baseball opinion, coming from a purely “popular” angle, I think Babe Ruth is an historically more popular and recognizably great player and name than Ty Cobb.

My answer is definitely based more in asking who was the most time-tested well-known great ballplayer of all time…in popular culture, not baseball culture.

Is it possible that if the candy bar had been named “Ty Cobb” that I would be choosing him?!

  3. Thanks Deborah…great observations! Sometimes it’s a good to hear the opinion of someone who is a “non-baseball person,” who views things strictly from a cultural perspective. Somehow, I don’t think the “Ty Cobb” candy bar would have done as well!

  4. The Baby Ruth candy bar was not named for George Herman Ruth, but for the daughter of President Grover Cleveland.

Gary, I am surprised that you were not aware as the candy bar was manufactured down the street from Wrigley when it was introduced ( actually renamed from Kandy Kake).

I agree with Ruth vs Cobb as no name in baseball has had more staying power.

If they did name a candy bar after Cobb it would have to be “Spikes Up”.😁

  5. Babe Ruth was the 1 who changed baseball for ever. The numbers that most look to are slg. obp. hr, total bases & rbi……Ruth is tops. Ty was a hitter but he also has an equipment advantage—-the size of gloves and materials used to make gloves. Ruth had no advantage; his numbers based on his God given abilities.
    Greatness incudes influence and achievements.
Ty is one of the greatest but Ruth is number 1 and maybe a league of his own.

  6. Babe Ruth with his .342 lifetime batting average and his 714 HRs is in my opinion, without a doubt, the greatest baseball player ever. He could pitch, hit, hit for power, field and run the bases. He was a very smart ballplayer, who’s charity work was beyond compare. He was often taken advantage of by people in higher positions in baseball, but they didn’t refer to old Yankee stadium, as the house Ruth built, for any old reason.
