Sportsman Park, St Louis, MO, June 7, 1941 – Yanks Joe DiMaggio looks to extend his hitting streak to 22 games against the Browns

Joe DiMaggio is up at the plate as he looks to extend his hitting streak to 22 games against the St Louis Browns. At this moment it’s just a modest streak and probably not getting the attention it will in due time, but he did finish the day with three singles in a 11-7 win over the Browns.

While DiMaggio did extend his streak it was teammate Charlie Keller who provided the big bat on the day hitting a 3rd inning grand slam to extend the Yanks lead to 6-1. The Browns would rally with a 3-run 8th inning to actually take a 7-6 lead, but New York would storm back in their next at-bat in the 9th scoring five runs.

As one can see it’s a meager crowd by the abundance of empty seats as only 2,394 turned out for the Saturday contest. The Browns were always use to small crowds since their counterparts the Cardinals stole the town from them in the 1930s with their string of World Series titles. And the size of today’s crowd was actually bigger than their season average of 2,288 per game.

Also in the photo is Browns catcher and Hall of Famer Rick Ferrell, home plate umpire Bill Grieve and on deck is Yankees Charlie Keller.
