Shibe Park, Philadelphia, PA, September 7, 1925 – The Goose is safe at first during sweep of A’s

In the first game of a doubleheader the Senators Goose Goslin slides safely into first base on an infield hit to beat the throw to Athletics first baseman Red Holt. Washington’s Joe Harris home run in the top of the eighth inning would give the visitors a 2-0 lead. A late rally in the bottom of the 9th would come up short for the A’s as the Senators would hold to a 2-1 win. Senator’s ace Walter Johnson would go the distance for his 19th win of the season giving up one earned run on nine hits and one strike out, his control was exceptional as he walked no one.

The Senators, or Nationals as they sometimes were called, also took the second game of the doubleheader nipping the A’s 7-6.

Going into the day the Senators, managed by player Bucky Harris, were seven games up Connie Mack’s A’s, who looked for a sweep to bring themselves within striking distance of the leaders, but the Washington sweep instead buried any chance for the A’s to take the AL pennant as it pushed them back nine games behind the Senators.
