Both new California baseball teams, the San Francisco Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers, are officially in action in their new residence as the first Major League pitch thrown in the Golden State is delivered by the Giants Ruben Gomez to Dodgers batter Gino Cimoli, who would end up striking out. Gomez would get the complete game shutout giving up only six hits and striking out six Dodgers in a 8-0 win. Giants shortstop Daryl Spencer had the honor of hitting the first Major League home run in California when he took Don Drysdale deep in the 4th inning with a solo shot. The following inning Orlando Cepeda would also go deep for the Giants with a solo shot and Gomez would aide his own cause with an RBI double.
23,448 fans were on hand at Seals Stadium, home to the Giants for two years before they would move into a very windy and chilly Candlestick Park.
