The second annual All-Star game between the American and National Leagues takes place in New York City. Carl Hubbell of the NY Giants has the honor of being the NL starting pitcher in his home ballpark while the Yankees ace Lefty Gomez gets the nod for the AL squad.
Gomez would have a rough go of it in his start giving up two home runs and four earned runs in just three innings work. Meanwhile Hubbell was outstanding in hs three inning, he held the formidable AL lineup to just two hits while striking out six. Despite the strong showing by Hubbell and the dismal performance by Gomez the AL would still win the game 9-7 thanks to a 6-run 5th inning, capped by a 2-run single by the Yankees pitcher Red Ruffing that scored Yankee teammate Bill Dickey and the Indians Earl Averill.
Five of Hubbell’s six strikeouts came in succession, in the first inning he fanned Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Jimmie Foxx and then in the second inning he would strikeout Al Simmons and Joe Cronin. A very impressive feat indeed.
