Ted Williams is in position in left field as his Red Sox square off with the Philadelphia Athletics in a Fourth of July doubleheader. Boston was winning 5-3 in the top of the sixth inning but Connie Mack’s A’s would tie it up in the seventh inning and win it in 12 innings 8-6. Barney McCosky was the big bat for Philadelphia with four hits and a key RBI.
Williams went hitless in four at-bats with two walks.But in the second game of the doubleheader the Splendid Splinter with go a perfect three for three and one RBI in a 4-0 win. Red Sox starter Tex Hughson would go the distance in a three-hit shutout while striking out six Athletics.
