Hall of Famer Frank Robinson steals home in the first inning to extend the Reds lead to 3-0. Robinson took off from third base on the wind up from Phillies pitcher Chris Short and slid past catcher Clay Dalrymple safely and into teammate John Edwards, who missed the pitch and was still following through on his swing. Interesting enough Robinson was called safe even so it looks like umpire Mel Steiner is about to give the out call.
Edwards would later add a pair of insurance run with a two-run double that stretched a then 3-1 Reds lead to a four-run advantage. Reds righty Bob Purkey would improve his record to 10-1 on the season, he would finish the year with 23 wins and finish third for the Cy Young Award.
The Reds would win the game in front of just 6,797 and the contest was played in 2:55, which for its time was a marathon of a game.
