Congratulations to the Red Sox and to the Entire Red Sox Nation!
The Red Sox have won their fourth World Series title in the last 14 years: 2004, 2007, 2013, and now 2018. That’s quite a run. They now have to be considered the most dominant team of our era. Their legions of fans are rightfully thrilled with this latest triumph — along with a couple “anyone but the Dodgers” fans I know who are also pretty happy too!
And that doesn’t take anything away from the Dodgers, also a great team with back-to-back appearances in the Fall Classic. That’s hard to do. They can certainly hold their heads high!
Some of you will remember my recent posts about the 1916 World Series. It’s the one in which Babe Ruth pitched 13 scoreless innings in Game Two, a streak that reached 29 in the 1918 World Series. From a purely baseball history perspective, I’ll be darned if history didn’t just repeat itself. This is exactly what happened when the two teams met back in 1916. In that series, the Red Sox also had a rather easy time of it, and, as in this year, prevailed four-games-to-one. Come to think of it, they were also the dominant team of that era too, with World Series championships in 1912, 1915, 1916, and 1918.
With the World Series coming to an end, that wraps up another great baseball season for us. So we now embark on another long winter and start the countdown until we again hear those magic words: “Pitchers and catchers report!” To help us get started with this off-season, here’s a tribute to the Boston Red Sox, with a few photos from their earlier championship years.
In the featured photo above, we see a great team photo of the 1912 World Series Champion Boston Red Sox. (Player identities available upon request.)
