The Tigers Hank Greenberg watches the flight of his opening day home run against the Chicago White Sox. Greenberg’s fifth inning smash off Sox pitcher John Whitehead cut the Tigers deficit to 4-2 and a ninth inning home run from pinch-hitter Chet Laabs cut the lead to one run, but Chicago would hold on to take the first game of the season 4-3.

Also in the this wonderful color photo is White Sox catcher Luke Sewell and Hall of Fame umpire Cal Hubbard. The game was played in one hour and 59 minutes.
