The Tigers Dick Bartell crashes into Reds catcher Jimmie Wilson in a failed attempt to score the first run in Game 5 of the 1940 World Series. Bartell tried to score on the first-inning single by Charlie Gehringer but the throw home by the Reds center fielder Mike McCormick was on the money for the second out in the frame.
Despite this setback the Tigers would trounce the Reds in a easy 8-0 win that got started by a three-run home run by Detroit slugger Hank Greenberg in the third inning. The Tigers would add four more runs in the fourth-inning for a 7-0 lead. On the mound it would be Tigers ace Bobo Newsom shutting out the Reds and limiting them to just three hits and striking out seven.
But the Reds, now down three games to two in the series, would rebound with wins in the next two games to capture their second World Series title and first in 20 years in seven games.
