In front of 6,200 chilly fans, the Red Sox’s Pinky Higgins is congratulated by teammate Rick Ferrell after hitting a second inning home run in a exhibition game against the Boston Braves. Higgins smash open the scoring in this preseason City Series for the Red Sox, but the Braves would respond in the bottom of the frame with three runs of their own. Shortly after the Sox would score six runs over the course of two innings – fourth and fifth – for a 7-3 lead and would hold off their National League counterparts for a 7-5 win in the first of two games scheduled between the two Beantown teams.
The Braves Vince DiMaggio homered in the seventh inning after striking out his first three times at bat that helped cut the Red Sox lead to two runs, but that would be the last runs for the day for both teams.
