Bill Gutman’s “The Old Sports Blog!”

We’re always happy to give our readers a little exposure when they start something new. Today I’m happy to announce that Bill Gutman has started a new sports blog. And, from the way Bill describes it, it should be right up our alley!

Here’s a link to Bill’s web site and new blog. I encourage everyone to check it out. After Bill’s introduction, you’ll see his first blog entry: “The Annual Rite of Spring,” in which Bill details the three little words all baseball fans love to hear: “Pitchers and Catchers,” signifying that “baseball is just around the corner and the annual rite of spring is upon us.”

As some of you know, Bill’s a talented and accomplished author. Over the years, he’s written over 200 books for children and adults, most involving sports. His subjects have ranged from an early biography of Pete Maravich to his latest, due out next week, a young adult biography of Aaron Judge. One of Bill’s best was The Giants Win the Pennant!, The Giants Win the Pennant!, the story of Bobby Thomson’s famous home run. He’s also self-published the “Mike Fargo Mystery Triology: Tales of a New York City detective working in the 1920’s,” including “Murder on Murders’ Row,” in which the Babe himself is a prime suspect!

Bill says the new blog will mainly be about “old sports or, more accurately, the older days of sports.” Commenting about the way sports have changed over the years, Bill adds: “Like many of us who have witnessed this evolution I’m not happy about many of the changes in today’s sports world…this blog will also discuss some of today’s more controversial issues of recent vintage.”

See what I mean about the blog being right up our alley?

Plus…what really caught my attention, Bill chose to feature on the very first edition of his new blog one of my favorite Old-Timers photos. It’s from the 1943 War Bond game. Here’s the player IDs:

Vince, Dom, and Joe DiMaggio

Top: Duffy Lewis, Eddie Collins, Roger Bresnahan, Connie Mack, Bill Klem, Red Murray, George Sisler. Front: Honus Wagner, Frankie Frisch, Babe Ruth, Walter Johnson, Tris Speaker.

I did a write-up about the War Bond game a couple years ago. You can click on this link to read about it.
