Tigers great Ty Cobb taking batting practice wearing sunglasses. He had undergone a surgical procedure on his eyes to remove a small growth from his left optic nerve at the Wilmer Eye Clinic of Johns Hopkins Hospital (Baltimore, MD), on March 1, 1926, under the famed Dr. William Holland Wilmer, assisted by Dr. Cecil H. Bagley. He was discharged on March 13, 1926, and immediately returned to Augusta, GA to take charge of the Tigers’ spring training. He wore dark, smoked sun-glasses to prevent irritation to his eyes.
