The New York Giants great Christy Mathewson is on the mound against the Athletics in the second game of the World Series as he matches pitch by pitch, inning by inning, of shutout ball with Philadelphia’s hurler Eddie Plank.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Athletics looked like they were on the verge of victory when they had had Amos Strunk on third and Jack Barry on second and nobody out. But Mathewson enticed the next batter, Jack Lapp, to ground out to pitcher Hooks Wiltse, who was filling in at first base, and the southpaw rifled the throw home to nab Strunk. The following batter was Plank, who too hit a ground ball to Wiltse and who once again threw home, this time nailing Barry for the second out. From there Mathewson got the third out in Eddie Murphy, who grounded back to the mound.

With that crisis averted the game went to the top of the 10th inning where Mathewson would aid his own cause with an RBI single for the first run of the game. Later in the same inning, the Giants shortstop Art Fletcher would knock in two insurance runs giving Matty, as some would call Mathewson, a 3-0 lead. He would shut down the A’s in a 1-2-3 10th inning to give the Giants their first win of this World Series and unfortunately their only win as Connie Mack’s A’s would win the series in five games.
