The Cardinals Jack Rothrock slides home safely under a leaping Mickey Cochrane of the Tigers. Rothrock scored on a Joe Medwick single to give the Cardinals a 1-0 first inning lead in the sixth game of the 1934 World Series. The Cardinals “Gashouse Gang” would hold on for a 4-3 win tying up the series at three games a piece, St Louis 21-year-old rookie pitcher Paul Dean was the hero on the mound and with the bat, not only did he pitch a complete game holding Detroit to seven hits and one earned run, he also drove in the winning run in the seventh-inning with a single scoring Leo Durocher.
The following day the Cardinals routed the Tigers 11-0 to secure their third World Series championship in nine years. For Detroit’s rooters it was another disappointment, their fourth failed attempt to win their first ever World Series.
And the seventh game also had it’s controversy when the Cards Medwick slid hard into Tiger third baseman Marv Owen. A brief scuffle ensued and when Medwick went back out to the field the Detroit rooters, frustrated by trailing 9-0 at this point, pelted the Carteret, NJ native with fruit, vegetables, bottles, just about anything they could get their hands on. Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis ordered Medwick out of the game, to his frustration, and ending the ruckus.
