A 38-year-old Babe Ruth is pitching the season finale for the New York Yankees against the Boston Red Sox. Ruth got the complete game win throwing 9 innings of 12 hit ball and giving up 5 earned runs while striking out none. He also of course hit a home run 6-5 win.
It was the only pitching appearance that year for the Babe, who was as everyone knows an accomplished pitcher earlier in his career with a 94-46 record and a career 2.28 ERA.
The Yanks would finish the season with a very respectable 91-59 record, unfortunately it was only good enough to finish in second place and seven games behind the Washington Senators.
The Red Sox meanwhile ended the season with yet another miserable record, a common occurrence for them during the 1920s and early 30’s, of 63-86. Boston finished in 7th place, it was the 11th year in the row that they would end up in 6th place our worse. In fact they have had yet to reach the .500 mark, or even come close to it, after they sold Ruth to the Yankees before the 1920 season.
