 It’s Time for a Quiz!

It’s been a while since I’ve had a quiz, so I think the time has come for another.

So here it is:

Can you name the only person enshrined in both the NFL Hall of Fame and also the National Baseball Hall of Fame?

It’s sort of a trick question…so put your thinking caps on!

I’m so convinced you won’t be able to come up with the answer that I’ve actually posted his photo as a huge hint.

Here’s the answer to the quiz question: Can you name the only person enshrined in both the NFL Hall of Fame and also the National Baseball Hall of Fame?

Answer: Umpire Cal Hubbard

Here’s some information about Cal Hubbard football player/ umpire Cal Hubbard that I think you’ll find interesting (from his Wikipedia page):

• Robert Calvin Hubbard (October 31, 1900 – October 17, 1977) designed the four-man umpiring crew and positioning in 1952 that continues to be used today.
• Hubbard played his college football in Louisiana and Pennsylvania before signing with the New York Giants in 1927. The Giants took the agile  tackle/end, using him primarily at the end position on offense and linebacker on defense. He’s credited as being one of the inventors of the football position of linebacker.
• Playing alongside fellow Hall of Famer Steve Owen, the Giants took the NFL Championship in Hubbard’s rookie season, 1927.
• Despite his success in New York, Cal yearned for a small town atmosphere and threatened retirement if he wasn’t traded to the Green Bay Packers. The Giants obliged and he flourished under Packer coach, Curly Lambeau. He helped the packers win three consecutive NFL Championships from 1929-1931.
• Cal played nine seasons in the National Football League for the Giants (1927-1928, 1936), the Packers (1929-1933, 1935) and the Pittsburgh Pirates (1936). He was a four-time NFL All-Pro First Team selection. During his offseason, he spent time umpiring minor league baseball games. His skill as an umpire was noticeable and he was called up to umpire in the majors in 1936.
• He managed in the American League from 1936-1951 and was selected to work the 1938 World Series in just his third season. He worked three other World Series and three All-Star Games including calling balls and strikes in the 1939 and 1944 Mid-Summer Classics.
• After Hubbard retired from football in 1936 and was forced to leave everyday umpiring in 1951 due to injury from a hunting accident, he was named the American League’s supervisor of umpires where he remained from 1954-1969.
• Cal Hubbard was a charter inductee into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1963 and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1962. He was also the inducted in to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1976 becoming the only person enshrined in the NFL and MLB Halls of Fame.
