Babe Ruth crosses home plate after his fourth-inning solo blast put the Yankees up 2-1 lead over the New York Giants in the second game of the World Series. Ruth would hit another home run the following inning to give his club a two-run lead and the Yankees would eventually take the game by a 4-2 score. Yanks ace Herb Pennock, who came over in the offseason from the Boston Red Sox, would get the complete game win, his first off five World Series wins he would compile with the Yankees.
This was a crucial series for the Yankees on several fronts, one this was the first year of them playing in Yankee Stadium after leaving the Polo Grounds in bad blood with the Giants ownership. It was also the third consecutive World Series that featured both New York teams with McGraw’s Giants getting the better of Ruth’s Yankees in the first two matchups in 1921 and 1922, another series loss would have been the Yanks third in a row against their hated rivals and would have been devastating to them and their growing fanbase.
But even after the Giants won the third game of the series 1-0, the Yankees would roar back to win the final three games to capture their first ever World Series title.
Also in this photo is Giants catcher Frank Snyder and home plate umpire Hank O’Day, who we have no idea what he is doing crotched over like that.
