Gehrig is out at home in bid for inside-the-park home run

Yankees Lou Gehrig rounds third base in a failed bid for an inside-the-park home run in the first inning of the third game of the World Series. Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Johnny Gooch would take the relay throw from shortstop Glenn Wright to put on the tag but not before two Yankees in the form of Earle Combs and Mark Koenig crossed home plate for an early 2-0 lead.

The Yankees would put six more runs on the board in the seventh inning capped by a three-run home run by Babe Ruth to expand the Yanks lead to 8-0. Meanwhile on the mound the Yanks southpaw Herb Pennock had his way with the Pirates, he held them hitless into the eighth inning until Pie Traynor broke through with a single. Traynor would come around to score on a Clyde Barnhart double cutting New York’s lead to seven runs. But that would be all the Pirates bats could muster on the day minus a meaningless single in the ninth inning. On the day Pennock limited the Pirates to just three hits and three baserunners, walking none and striking out one. It was also Pennock’s fifth World Series win against no defeats, he would finish his postseason career with a minuscule 1.95 ERA.

The following day the Yankees would take game four by a 4-3 score to capture their second World Series championship in one of the most dominant seasons in Major League history. Not only did they sweep the Pirates, but they won the American League pennant with a 110-44 record, 19 games ahead of the second place Philadelphia Athletics.
