The Bees Rabbit Warstler beats the throw to third base in the first game of a Thursday doubleheader won by the first-place New York Giants 2-1 in ten innings. New York took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Burgess Whitehead single home Sam Leslie, Boston would then tie it up in sixth on a Tommy Thompson hit scoring Gene Moore. The game would go into extra innings as hurlers for both sides, the Giants Hal Schumacher and Bees Danny MacFayden, would hold serve until the tenth inning when an error would turn the tide of the game. Travis Jackson, who is the third baseman in this photo, would reach safely and advance to second on a throwing error by his counterpart at third base Billy Urbanski. The next batter, pitcher Schumacher, would aid his cause by singling home Jackson for the 2-1 lead and win.
Also in the photo is home plate umpire George Magerkurth. In the background of Braves Field is the bleachers famously known as the Jury Box, named that after a reporter noticed during one slow mid-week game that there were only twelve individuals sitting in the 2,000-seat stand, as poor attendance was a common occurrence as was the case for this doubleheader with only 6,753 at hand. It didn’t help matters that at this time the Bees were a struggling ballclub with a 69-80 record coming into this game and coming off a 1935 season where they went 38-115.
