The Athletics Rusty Peters puts the tag down on Red Sox base runner Jimmie Foxx* as he unsuccessfully tries to steal third base in the fifth inning of a tied ball game. Umpire Cal Hubbard, an NFL Hall of Fame player who played for the Giants, Packers and Steelers before picking up a clicker, is in prime position to punch out Foxx. Not literally of course.

Boston would take the lead in the next inning as Buster Mills would hit a two-run home run scoring pitcher Johnny Marcum for a 5-3 lead. After the A’s narrowed the lead to a run on a Wayne Amber single in the seventh inning, the Red Sox right fielder Ben Chapman would hit a three-run shot in the eighth inning to give his team a comfortable 8-4 lead. From there reliever Archie McKain would earn his first save of the season shutting the A’s down the final three innings to secure the Boston win.

* – Me and Don Stokes are more than convinced we got the date right when the photo was taken, we are surmising, quite confidently, that this is Jimmie Foxx attempting to steal third in the fifth inning. There was only two plays at third base with the Red Sox on the bases and one was a force out in the third inning.
