Happy Mothers’ Day from all of us at Old-Time Baseball Photos!
We can’t let an occasion like this pass without a connection to old-time baseball! So here’s my little contribution to the day, a salute to…
“Baseball Players and Their Wives and Mothers!”
In the featured photo above, we see one of the more famous mothers in baseball lore, Christina Foch Gehrig, the beloved mother of Lou Gehrig. Here’s a few words about Lou’s early family life:
His father Henrich (1867-1946) was a sheet-metal worker by trade who was frequently unemployed due to alcoholism, and his mother, Christina (1818-1954) a maid, was the main breadwinner and disciplinarian in the family. His two sisters died at an early age from whooping cough and measles; a brother also died in infancy. From an early age, Gehrig helped his mother with work, doing tasks such as folding laundry and picking up supplies from the local
stores. Gehrig spoke German during his childhood. In 1910, he lived with his parents at 2266 Amsterdam Avenue in Washington Heights. In 1920, the family resided on 8th Avenue in Manhattan. His name was often anglicized to Henry Louis Gehrig and he was known as “Lou” so he would not be confused with his identically named father, who was known as Henry.
Click on any photo to see a photo tribute to other baseball mothers. So far I’ve found the mothers of: Ernie Banks, Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle, Jackie Robinson, Lou Gehrig, Paul and Lloyd Waner, Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, Walter Johnson, Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker, and Birdie Tebbetts.
Feel free to add any more “baseball mothers” in the comments section below. Then I’ll be sure to include them in the photo gallery!

nice tribute to the Mom’s!!
Just pointing out the Waner brothers photo can’t be from 1925. Lloyd’s rookie year wasn’t until 1927 so it had to be that year or later.
Thanks..that should say 1927
