Thanks again to David Russell for sharing with us this great photo. It’s from the 1959 All-Star game (Ist game) played at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh on July 7,1959.
L-R: Stan Musial, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, and Wally Moon. The National League won, 5-4. The winning pitcher was Johnny Antonelli, and the loser was Whitey Ford in front of 35,277 fans.
In a break from tradition, the league scheduled a “doubleheader” as part of an effort to boost the players’ pension fund. The second game was held on August 3 at Memorial Coliseum, the home of the newly-transplanted Los Angeles Dodgers. The American League won the second game 5–3. The experiment of two All-Star Games each year continued through the 1962 season, after which the playing of one annual game resumed.
The game included no less than 19 future Hall-of-Famers: Casey Stengel, Early Wynn, Nellie Fox, Louis Aparicio, Al Kaline, Jim Bunning, Whitey Ford, Hoyt Wilhelm, Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams, Don Drysdale, Orlando Cepeda, Eddie Mathews, Ernie Banks, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Warren Spahn, Stan Musial, and Bill Mazeroski.
The Umpires were Ed Runge, Home Plate (AL); Al Barlick, First Base (NL); Joe Paparella, Second Base (AL); Augie Donatelli, Third Base (NL); Johnny Rice, Left Field (AL); Shag Crawford, Right Field (NL)
